BOISIGN UP FOR ONLINE ACCESS WITH GEORGIA TAX CENTER
By: Melissa Molina
Individual and business taxpayers are encouraged to sign up for an online account through the Georgia Tax Center for tax matters related to the Georgia Department of Revenue. Due to staffing shortages and procedural changes, governmental entities are moving many services to online only interactions. In addition, having an online account makes it easier to remit tax payments. Georgia actually requires tax filers that owe over $10,000 for estimated taxes to remit all future estimated payments by electronic funds transfer and will assess penalties of 10% of the tax payment due for failure to pay electronically. Even if you are not over this threshold, we recommend you submit tax payments electronically to have a way of quickly confirming your payment was received by the Georgia Department of Revenue.
While the Georgia Tax Center does allow for taxpayers to make Quick Payments without an actual account, not all payments should be remitted this way. Payments remitted through the Quick Payment module are considered payments on the return by the Georgia Department of Revenue, therefore, payments for an extension or estimate could be misapplied. As such, the Georgia Department of Revenue may refund any overpayment shown on your return and this could lead to incurring penalties and interest. Therefore, we recommend you establish an online account to make all tax payments.
