BOIExtended Tax Filing Deadline Due to Hurricane Helene
As we head into April 2025, we wanted to remind everyone about the extended tax filing deadline for individuals and businesses in areas affected by Hurricane Helene. This extension is intended to allow taxpayers extra time to manage their tax obligations without added pressure.
Key Highlights of the Extension
Who is Eligible: This applies to taxpayers residing or operating a business in the federally declared disaster areas affected by Hurricane Helene. This included the entire states of Georgia, Alabama, North Carolina, South Carolina, and parts of Florida, Tennessee, and Virginia.
New Deadline: The tax filing and payment deadlines have been extended to May 1, 2025.
Included Tax Deadlines: This includes filing individual and business tax returns for tax years 2023 and 2024, making quarterly estimated payments for tax years 2024 and 2025, and various other tax-related deadlines.
No Late Fees or Penalties: Eligible taxpayers will automatically receive this extension and will not incur late fees or penalties during this period.
What This Means for You
Tax payments coming due May 1st: Any 4th quarter estimated tax payments originally due in January as well as corporate and individual extension payments for 2024 will be payable on May 1st. Balances due on certain returns for 2024 as well as 1st quarter estimated tax payments for 2025 will also be due by May 1st instead of April 15th.
Returns will still be extended as of April 15th : While taxpayers have until May 1st to file returns for tax year 2024, if the returns will need to be extended, those extensions are still due by April 15th, even if payments are deferred to May 1st. We will be filing protective extensions for any returns not already transmitted for filing as of April 11, 2025.
